Being up close and personal with a whale shark has been a dream of mine for decades.  I simply can’t imagine any diver, snorkeler or ocean lover that doesn’t dream of swimming with these gentle giants.  My dream was finally realized this year on a trip to the Maldives.  The most reliable area to spot whale sharks in the Maldives is located in the South Ari Atoll, where they are known to congregate all year long.   I was fortunate enough to spot three whale sharks in one day.

The beauty below was about 30 feet long.  I estimate that she was the size of a school bus.

As I swam above this spectacular creature, my Maldivian guide asked to borrow my camera.  This was the result!

The Maldivian crew were expert in sighting the whale sharks, and believe me it was no easy task.  They must have honed this skill for generations.

In my next post, I will tell you much more about my trip to the Maldives.  Stay tuned!
